Every two minutes someone finds out that they have Type 2 diabetes, a potentially serious health condition that can lead to sight loss, kidney failure, loss of a limb, and doubles the likelihood of heart attack or stroke.
And now, evidence shows that people who have diabetes face a significantly higher risk of dying with Covid-19.
In order to urgently help more people to reduce their risk of developing the disease, we are really pleased to announce that we are now offering fast-track, online access to our Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme service.
Previously, access to the programme was dependent on blood test results and a referral from a health professional. Now, anyone can find out if they are at risk by using the Diabetes UK online tool – and answering a few questions about their health and lifestyle.
It only takes a few minutes, and if they are deemed as medium or high risk, they will be invited to join their local Healthier You service to start making immediate and positive changes to their health.
Since we started delivering Healthier You in 2015, we have supported more than 83,000 people to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Stuart Fisher, Programme Director for Reed Wellbeing, said:
“We’re really pleased that this new tool will not only give more people a clearer idea of their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes but allows people to really easily access our vital service.
“Reed Wellbeing has been delivering Healthier You for five years, and we see first-hand the huge impact it has on people’s lives.
“We’re all about helping people to take control by making plausible long-term lifestyle changes that drastically reduce their risk. And we make sure our service is accessible remotely, as well as face-to-face in Covid-19 secure environments.
“There is genuinely no reason that someone deemed ‘at risk’ shouldn’t use our free service to make immediate change.”
Saying no to diabetes
Philip, a participant on our Healthier You programme in South Yorkshire, has experienced huge benefits to his health as a result of the service. He said:
“The diabetes prevention programme is extremely informative, well delivered, easy to understand and to follow.
“I’m really happy that by engaging in the programme, I’m saying no to diabetes.
“Now at the mid-point of the course, my weight and BMI are at normal level, my clothes are fitting better, and my high blood pressure condition is now at normal level.
“If you are considering the service, I would just say ‘don’t hesitate – participate!’”
