They say music soothes the soul. It might be a saying you've heard and not known why, but there is strong evidence reported by Nature Neuroscience that there is a link between music and our mental wellbeing.

Music is a powerful tool which can match or alter our moods, and it can trigger feelings we had during the period when we first listened to them. These feelings can vary, and depending on what memories are triggered, they can be either positive or negative.

In 2011, a study published by McGill University in Montreal showed that music releases dopamine, one of the ‘happy chemicals’, of the brain. The study found that dopamine levels were 9% higher when we listen to our favourite music. You might be wondering why that is?

Listening to our favourite music engages the neocortex, which can create a sense of calm. It helps to form our identity, so, when we hear our favourite music again, it reinforces this sense of calm by reminding us of who we are.

Ways that music helps us:

  • Improved focus, which can lead to better learning

  • Mood lifting and confidence boosting

  • Aids in relaxation and reduced stress

  • Helps with emotional thoughts and feelings

  • Supports communication through lyrics

  • Improves memory

  • Lowers blood pressure and a reduced heart rate

  • Expression

  • A great way to connect and enhance social connections

Music is an influential tool, and it can completely change the way we act, feel, and think. Whether that is mending a broken heart or empowering you for the day ahead, it is something we can all benefit from.

My task for you is to create a playlist of your favourite songs so that you have a feel-good, energising playlist, ready for when you need it most. It doesn’t have to be the same genre of music, but whatever you enjoy most.

Once you’ve created your playlist, fully immerse yourself into the songs by noticing the melody changes, carefully distinguish specific instruments or take notice of the lyrics.

My team and I have some recommendations you may want to explore and possibly add to your playlist:

  • Danny - 'Shiny Happy People' by R.E.M.

  • Jason - 'Highway to Hell' by ACDC

  • Hazel – ‘Boogie Wonderland’ by Earth, Wind & Fire

  • Heather - 'Fast Car' by Tracey Chapman

  • Lewis - 'Learn to Fly' by Foo Fighters

  • Lesa - 'I Have Nothing' by Whitney Houston

Lastly a perfect quote to summarise the power of music - “Music is one of the longest standing self-prescribed therapies in history” – Erin Seibert, Music Therapist
